Beverly Lasher leaves legacy to support women pursuing advanced degrees

Evanston, IL – August 24, 2018 – Through the generosity of Alpha Phi alumna Beverly Lasher (Theta—Michigan), Alpha Phi Foundation announces a $1,073,797 bequest—the largest single gift in Alpha Phi Foundation’s 62-year history—to endow the Beverly Lasher Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will support members of the Theta chapter of Alpha Phi International Fraternity who are working towards graduate degrees.

Lasher joined Alpha Phi in 1947. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1949, Lasher went on to work in a number of fields, including ophthalmology and marketing, eventually owning Postal Instant Press in Birmingham, MI. At the time of her death in 2016, Lasher was 89.

“Beverly’s legacy of strength, determination, and belief in the abilities of her sisters will be preserved in this scholarship,” says Alpha Phi Foundation Executive Director Amy Peebles (Beta—Northwestern). “We look forward to supporting Alpha Phi women to fulfill their potential and pursue their graduate studies without financial burden.”

The Beverly Lasher Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in the 2019-2020 academic year.

“The Beverly Lasher Memorial Scholarship is an incredible gift to our sisterhood,” says Alpha Phi Foundation Board Chair Mary Beth C. Tully (Epsilon Psi—Lehigh). “Beverly believed in the power of education, and that each generation should extend a helping hand to those that followed. Most importantly, armed with what they learn and the fields they pursue, Beverly Lasher Memorial Scholars will make a discernible difference in the world.”

Alpha Phi Foundation awarded more than $277,000 in merit- and need-based scholarships to undergraduate and graduate Alpha Phis for the 2018-2019 academic year. The 2019-2020 scholarship application will open December 1, 2018. Learn more about the Alpha Phi Foundation Scholarship Program at www.alphaphifoundation.org/scholarships.
